During the weekend I attended the Shoalhaven Dressage Clubs 25th Anniversary competition.. setting up a display of my artwork.. as something a little different I decided to do a live demonstration of a pastel portrait.

It was a lot of fun and nice to know that people knew exactly who it was I was drawing with out me having to tell them... A big Frisian stallion named The Wizard.

Ive wanted to try a black on black work for such a long time.. but being such a fuss pot when it comes to reference photos .. it took awhile until I found just the right image to try this.

It was a lot of fun working out which parts to leave the same colour as the paper that is no colour added to the paper at all.. In some places I had to remove pastel as with all the blending those spots lost that pure black of the paper..

Ive had a suggestion that I should try a leopard appy in a snow storm.. now that would be a challenge ☺

Safe

New work based on the rescue of the brumbies here in Australia.. This mare was rescued from the doggers some months ago by a Brumby Rescue group here in Australia.. she has since given birth.. hence the title of this piece Safe.

Safe a pastel work 9" x 11" and will be auctioned off to raise money for the sanctuary to both care for the horses already there and to help rescue others, handle and relocate to new homes.

I will blog when the auction is up and running with a link for those of my collectors who would like to have the opportunity to purchase this piece through a bidding system.

The Wiz... work in progress

The Wiz - Friesian Stallion

Recently I was invited to attend the Shoalhaven Dressage Championship show with a display of my artwork... riders will be coming from all over the state for this event.

As some thing different from just a display of my artwork .. Ive decided to do a live demonstration of how I work ... I thought it might create a little more interest if people could observe me working  and could ask questions...

Last year at this event my husband took a number of photos for me of a beautiful Friesian stallion called Wizard.. it is one of his photos I will be using for my demonstration.. 

Ive worked the drawing up to the stage shown and will finish off his bridle, mane and shoulder over the dressage weekend.

The Wiz will be 20" x 25" when finished and is being drawn in pastel...

Listening  is finally finished.. I really enjoy working with Windsor and newtons charcoal grey.. it has to be my favourite colour of all.

To finish off Listening I worked on the dapples on the horses neck and chest not wanting to over emphasise these as it would have over powered the painting..

First Gymkhana

First Gymkhana

First Gymkhana is finally finished.. I didn't realise how long all those roan coloured hairs would take on the horses shoulder and chest.. ☺

Getting the right colour mix for the shadow of the rein and neck where interesting ... experimenting with a mix of colours till I finally found the shade I was happy with.

All that's left is to seal the painting once Ive let it dry out completely for a few days.. I find its much better to leave it a few days especially with the humid weather we've been having.
